Nigeria to Host Second Edition of Africa Military Games in November

Nigeria is set to host the second edition of the Africa Military Games, with at least 23 countries expressing interest in participating. The first edition of the games was held in Kenya over 20 years ago.

Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, the Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters and Chairman of the Sport Organising Committee, confirmed Nigeria’s preparedness to host the event during a press conference in Abuja. Marquis emphasized that the games would serve as a platform to enhance peace and security, demonstrating to the world that Nigeria is a safe place. He highlighted that the event would also promote international diplomacy, military cooperation, and investment opportunities in Nigeria.

Major-General Maikano Abdullahi, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), stated that the theme of the event, “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” provides the continent an opportunity to tell its own story positively. He mentioned that countries outside Africa, such as Russia, Germany, and the United States, have shown interest in participating. Nearby nations like Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad have also indicated their interest in taking part.

Despite the preparations being in full swing, the budget allocated for hosting the event was not disclosed. The Africa Military Games will take place from November 5 to 18 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, featuring 19 events, including Badminton, Boxing, Basketball, Football, Golf, Athletics, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, and Wrestling.

The idea of creating the Africa Military Games originated from Cameroonian national Hamad Kalkaba Malboum. In 2000, African delegates at the CISM meeting in Johannesburg accepted Nairobi’s host bid following a presentation by Kenyan military personnel Jack Tuwei and Frank Mulu. A total of 1,562 athletes competed in the first edition’s 11-sport programme.

As the host, Nigeria aims to leverage this event to foster military cooperation and showcase the nation’s capabilities and hospitality to the world.
